Let’s just be real here, it’s hard to explain what a steel mace is to someone who doesn’t know what it is. I personally have had a hard time with this. How do we as trainers (or even enthusiast trying to tell our friends about it) explain that? Especially when we know it has tons of benefits for the mind, body and spirit! The mace is such an old ancient tool, it’s been around for a very long time but sadly it hasn’t been in the hands of everyone. Thanks to a few companies and trainers out there we are now utilizing it for fitness purposes which are fucking awesome because this will revolutionize the mace!

First off, it shouldn’t be our duty to be pushy about the mace. The warrior will come when they are ready. Not everyone is ready for the mace and some may not ever be interested and that is okay! Second, I believe there is no right or wrong way of explaining the mace to someone new. So you do you no matter what I say on here. I am always encouraging others to just be themselves in all they do. STAY TRUE. Like my knuckles say.

1) Don’t be all technical about the mace

Let’s just be honest sometimes people don’t wanna hear all the technical jargon. It’s cool to know your shit but sometimes people just want you to get to the point. What is a mace? An ancient weapon that is now being used as a fitness tool to get a full body workout. Sounds nice right? Simple and if they are interested in knowing more about the mace, they shall ask and that’s when the smarty pants can come out of you.

2) Use some comparisons to get some visualization going

The best way to get someone to visualize the mace is by comparing it to something else. What can we compare the mace to? What’s its nearest neighbor?  I’d say the Kettlebell or Clubs.  We can use that as a comparison but also inform on how it’s different.

3) Just tell them it’s a big long handle with a weighted head at the top

I have tried this and they always look at me like I am crazy. Seriously! But it gets them interested enough to ask me to show them a picture of it. And then they get it! Honestly, this is the easiest route along with the next one.

4) Show them your moves baby!

Last but not least, if you have a mace nearby, show them your moves. I love to showcase that you can practically do all the movements you can do with a kettlebell or barbell and then emphasize that there are all sorts of things you can’t do with other tools but that you can do with the mace.

Anyways, in summary! These are a few ways to get people to know the mace. Obviously it’s not everything but I wanted to discuss this subject because I know this is not just happening to me. So now I am going to ask you, have you’ve been looked at in a confused manner when you mentioned the steel mace? And what have you done to explain it to someone new?

May the universe always flow with you,
